Ask Joey-A Dog's Senses
A Dog's Senses-Different than Humans'?
Dear Joey,
Species full movie
I don't have a problem. I was just wondering something about you dogs. How are your senses (hearing, eyesight, touch, taste, smell) compared with ours?
Thanks,
Jeffrey
Dear Jeffrey,
Glad you asked! There are some differences in dogs senses and human senses. Our hearing is much better than humans'. A dog's sense of hearing is almost twice that of a human's. And we can hear many more frequencies than you people can (hence the dog whistle).

Our eyesight is where you have us dogs beat. We can't see with the same detail as you. And although it's a myth that dogs can only see in black and white, we don't have the color spectrum that humans have. So we can see some colors, they are just more muted. We do have a wider range of vision because of where our eyes are placed. We can also see better at night.
I think our sense of touch is pretty close to humans although humans are alittle more sensitive to the sense of touch.
Dogs taste isn't as strong as humans. You have us beat here too.
Our sense of smell is where dogs realy shine! It's is up to a million times stronger than humans! We can judge many things about our environment with our noses! We can even find cancer with it! There's a great article over at CNN.com about just all the things are cute little noses can do!
So although we are superior in some areas, and inferior in others, I guess it all evens out. Right?
