My Dog Died!

Dear Joey,

Grizzly Rage dvd    I'm in my freshman year at college and live awayfrom home. My mom called me a few days ago to tell me that Penny, the cocker spaniel I have had since I was a little girl, has died! I didn't even get a chance to say goodbye! I can't stop crying and my roommate and friends think I'm overreacting since it "was just a dog".

Dear Holly,

Wonder Woman dvd    What a coincidence, my mom also had a cocker spaniel when she was a child named Penny. She too was very sad when her beloved dog died. We doggies have a way of giving humans unconditional love and companionship and we become part of the family. And when we die, many humans feel like they have lost part of their family. If you aren't a "pet person", it's hard to understand that. That's why your friends don't get it.

It doesn't help that you are away from your family…who does understand what a loss this is.   The first thing to do is, allow yourself to feel this grief. You need to work through it. If you need to talk to someone who understands what you are going through, google "pet loss support hotline" (you don't need the quotes). You will find loads of numbers you can call to talk someone who can help you process your grief.

Next, make a little memorial for Penny. A scrapbook, a written memoir, a craft project (painting, pottery, needlework piece) if you like crafts. A great place to list your pet's passing and to get support is PetLoss.com Babylon 5: Thirdspace trailer (just a warning, music automatically plays when you go to the site). You may also want to keep a journal and write out all your feelings while you are going through the toughest stages of grief.

When you do go home, it may hit you all over again as you notice the obvious absense of Penny.  Ask your parents, if you could hold a little memorial for Penny. It will help you feel better.

I hope this helps Holly. Nothing can bring Penny back. But please know you aren't alone. My momma has lost numerous pets in her years and she grieves deeply over each one. But she still is glad she had them and wouldn't trade the experience for anything.
