Ask Joey-My elderly mom wants a dog!
Dear Joey,
My 81 year old mom lives alone and would like a dog for companionship. She is somewhat limited in that she can't walk much so she can't take a dog for walks. Is this a good idea? I have been trying to get her to get a cat instead but she really wants a dog.

Hi Trent,
Yes, for your mom's situation a cat would probably be easier for her to handle but I can't say I blame her for wanting a dog. After all, we dogs are pretty amazing creatures.
At the very least, your mom needs to have a yard and should be mobile enough to be able to let the dog in and out. A doggy door might be a good idea. If finances are not an issue, she should consider hiring a dog walker to walk the dog at least a few times a week.
A puppy is probably not a good idea. They are way too active and need lots of training. A more settled, older dog would probably work well for your mom. Many older people prefer small dogs but remember small dogs sometimes need help getting on and off beds and couches. If your mother isn't able to lift the dog easily, she might do better with a medium size dog.
Like wise large dogs might be hard to control on a leash.
It really depends on the individual dog though, so don't discount a dog just because of it's size.
Some good breeds to consider are the Greyhound, the Schnauzer, Pugs, Poodles, Shih-Tzus, Beagles, Pomeranians, Cocker Spaniels and the All American Mutt.
Whatever you pick, make sure your mom enrolls herself and the dog in an dog training class. If physical limitations keep her from going to class you can go for her and help her with training at home. Or invest in an online dog training class .
Good luck and keep us posted.
