Dog News-A New Dog Magazine and More

February 25, 2010 by doggymom
Filed under Featured, Harley's Dog News

It's been awhile since Harley has given you any dog news. She has been staying with my mother lately to keep her company when I'm not there. So I thought I would fill in.

First, there is a new FREE online magazine out there called Total Dog Magazine. It looks like a regular magazine but it all online. I ordered it myself and was very impressed with the articles. If you are interested, sign up here: http://totaldog.co.uk

Another thing I was impressed with. Purina contacted me to let me know about their new pet video series "Do More for Pets". They plan to feature 9 short videos this Spring. 3 are up so far. It stars hunky Jeff Probst of Survivor fame and his cat Zoey and dog Cooper.  If you'd like to watch them, the first one is Hiking and Camping with your Dog http://domoreforpets.yahoo.com/?video=1 .The second one is Nuturing your Cat's Inner Wildcat http://domoreforpets.yahoo.com/?video=2 and the third one is Safely Taking your Dog on a Car Ride http://domoreforpets.yahoo.com/?video=3.

The 3rd thing is not free but I love this idea and thought it was so touching, I had to include it. Pet Memorial Tree Gifts plants a tree in memory of your pet  in U.S. National Forests that have been destroyed by wildfire. What a thoughtful loving way to remember your beloved pup and such a renewal of life! Each Memorial Tree Gift includes the planting of a tree, a card that explains the gift, the pet’s name and optional photo on our pet registry, and access to information about where the tree was planted. Here's the web addy: http://www.treesforachange.com/petmemorials.html

Ok, the next piece of news is for fellow pet bloggers. Have you heard about Blog Paws? It's an organization created for the online  pet community. This April 9th and 10th, they are having their first ever Blog Paws 2010. It's a convention in Columbus Ohio for pet bloggers to get together and learn and network. I really want to go but funds are kind of tight right now. Any pet companies want to help sponser me??? If so write me at doggymom@bloggydoggies.com and we can work something out.

My last note is kind of sad. Our beloved Joey is going into surgery in the morning for a cancerous growth on his leg. They will test him to see if it has spread but is doesn't look good.Yes, he's an old guy, almost 14 but he's still my baby. Keep him in your thoughts and prayers. Below is a picture I just took of him. He has the collar on because he keeps trying to gnaw at the growth. Yuch.

Ok, that's it for now.

Help Shelter Dogs and Win Prizes Too

February 10, 2010 by doggymom

Anyone who has followed this blog for any length of time knows that we have a heart for dogs who need rescuing.  So when I received a email from Joanne Wannan, I had to tell you all about it.

Alot of us who love dogs, are heartbroken over the plight of all the abandoned pets out there due to the economy, and the over run shelters trying to save as many pets as possible. Joanne Wannan of Inspiring Animal Rescue Stories has decided to do something about it.

Joanne wrote a book called  NEW LIVES: Stories of Rescued Dogs Helping, Healing and Giving Hope. It tells of 18 dogs who were rescued from shelters and the streets, who are now performing miracles in animal therapy and as service dogs .

Joanne says, "During the process of writing New Lives I became aware of numerous animal shelters and other organizations who are really struggling right now due to the slow economy. It’s really the small shelters and organizations that are have been affected the most."

So she created a contest where people can tell their shelter story, and win prizes too!  Two winners will each have 15% of the profits from the sale of NEW LIVES donated to the shelter or rescue of their choice.

To get all the details go to www.InspiringRescueStories.com

Harley's Dog News-Dog Heros, the Oldest Living Dog and a Dog Miracle!

June 10, 2009 by doggymom

Hi Doggy Lovers, Harley the News Hound here & I have lots of interesting dog news for you this week.

Tequila Sunrise movie

Kramer vs. Kramer move

Paddy the DVD sniffing dog

I'm sure you have heard of drug sniffing dogs and bomb sniffing dogs but have you heard of a DVD sniffing dog?

Paddy is a black lab that has been trained to sniff out the chemicals used in bootleg discs. Paddy was given to the Malaysian government by the trade association and has so far helped to shut down 6 different warehouses with the pirated DVDs worth $6.1 billion.

Paddy is one pup who has definitely earned his keep!

Four years ago a heartbroken man had to leave his beloved dog behind when he was evacuated during Katrina. J.J. was in an elevated part of Jessie Pullin's house with food and water for several days. Unfortunately Jessie was not allowed back for several weeks.

Fortunately, J.J. was rescued by an animal rescue group and was sent to different animal organizations before being put up for adoption in California. In with Thieves download

Jessie never gave up looking for J.J. and finally tracked him down in his new home. He entered a legal battle with the help of the Katrina Animal Reunion Team. The legal battle ended when the woman who had adopted J.J. gave him back to Jessie.

Pullins said, "Everybody falls in love with J.J.. He's lovable. I don't fault them."

The oldest dog recorded was a dog named Bluey, a Queensland Heeler who lived to be 29 years and 5 months old.

Smokey is a Shih Tzu  who is  23 is .trying to beat that record. Florida residents Joe and Mary Slatton said they were not impressed when NBC's "Today" show featured a 21-year-old dachshund dubbed the oldest living dog, because their Shih Tzu, Smokey, is two years that dog's senior.

Smokey's vet has verified Smokey's age and that he is in excellent health. Smokey was born on January 18, 1986.

Joe Slatton said that Smokey has slowed down with age a bit but he is still very active, enjoys walks  and loves to look at appliances at Home Depot.

"I wouldn't know to what specific thing I could attribute his age to," he said. "I guess it's just a combination of a healthy Pedigree diet and loads of exercise."

 Eika Haas and Tequila

Sweet little Tequila, a breeding poodle was adopted by Eika Haas when she became too old to be bred. Tequila loved her new role as lap dog and became very attached to Eika.

Recently Eika and her husband Steven took Tequila and their other 2 dogs on a camping trip to a remote part of Wyoming. Tequila stayed right by their side until halfaway through the trip when they realized she was missing.

They searched for her as long as the light held out and then stayed up late by the campfire hoping she would find her way back to the camp.

Poor little Tequila was not equipped to brave the harsh Wyoming wilderness.

Steven and Eika stayed out 4 extra days searching for her with no luck and finally heart broken, had to face the facts that the little poodle probably had not survived.

30 days later they got the surprise of their lives when they got a call from Midge Dandridge. She explained that she and her partner Dick Woltering found Tequila out in the forest.

Eika assumed she meant they had found the poodle's dead body and was happily shocked to find out that Tequila was just fine!
Considering that the area Tequila was lost in is inhabited by bears, wolves, coyotes, not to mention the snow that had fallen, it is quite a miracle that she survived so long on her own.

Eika left almost immediatley and drove all night to reunite with Tequila and was surprised to find that she was in relatively good health. She had lost some weight. She went from 16 pounds to 10 pounds. They assume she survived on grubs, worms, seeds, bugs and maybe a few mice.

The one thing that has improved for the little dog is that  her Obsessive/Compulsive Disorder (she developed from being confined for so many years in a cage when she was a breeder) has improved. The Haases have decided to never take Tequila with them again when they go camping. The next time, they plan to have Tequila's saviors Midge and Dick watch her for them. Good idea!

Our last story is about a little Chihuahua mix named Spaz who saved his human mom's life. Spaz woke up 58 year old Lillian Miller about 3 a.m.. Saturday nght in Groveland, FL. Lillian assumed he needed to go outside for a potty break  and she took him out.

When she was outside, she noticed her house was on fire. There was a fire alarm but Lillian didn't have her hearing aid in and did not hear it. But Spaz did!

Bickford Shmeckler's Cool Ideas release

Spaz saved her life! Lillian is now staying with her parents who say that Spaz holds a special place in their hearts! Good dog!

That's all for this week!

Rolling dvdrip   I'm raring to give you this week's dog news! I have been waiting all week for my turn at the blog.

  •

The Frighteners   First, you know how little dogs don't realize they are little? Momma told us about how one of her Yorkies got kicked out of obedience school because she would have the class laughing hysterically when the Yorkie would attack the Doberman Pincher in the class. And the Dobie would cower in fear over this 6 pound Yorkie.

I got  alittle off track but this story is about 2 brave little dogs in Oregon. Chiquita the Chihuahua and Rosie the Border Terrier used their mighty tiny dog powers and chased away a cougar. The cougar actually pinned down Rosie but Chiquita barked so ferociously that it scared the cougar away.

black_lab_tideat2b

In Washington state, Blewett a black lab who had been rescued from Washington's Blewett's Pass and given a home by Jay and Janie Smith of Plain, WA, did some rescueing himself.

Jay and Janie were walking Blewett when he ran ahead of them to the river's edge and started barking. When they caught up to him, they discovered he had found Pepper, an old dog who had been missing several days. He had apparently been swept away by the river. Pepper is home  now and doing fine now thanks to Blewett.

Bon Cop, Bad Cop film

Our last story is about 2 good Samaritans, Curtiss and Chris Taylor who are both unemployed. After their neighbor was deported, he left behind 8 pit bulls to fend for themselves. The 2 brothers tried to get local shelters to take the dogs, but none would. The dogs had been neglected and have some health problems. The brothers have taken them in and hope to find them homes. They have been feeding them and grooming them, and giving them what medical care they can.

2009: Lost Memories release    "I really can't afford to take care of them but I don't want to see them starve either," admitted Chris Taylor.

"I want to find them a good home," said Curtiss Taylor.  "I think they deserve a good home."

They have not found homes yet but they have had some donations. One donor deopped off 150 pounds of dry dog food and a case of wet dog food. They have also received some moonetary donations and donations to a local Veterinarian to help give the dogs the medical care they need.

If you're interested in adopting one or more of the dogs, contact Chris Taylor at 602-348-6868 or Curtiss Taylor at Cimarron film 602-622-0223.

Harley's Dog News-dog washing machines, rattlesnakes and dog heros

Another Wednesday and another week of dog news to report on. Are you ready for this week's tidbits? Ok, let's get started!

First I wanted to report on what seems like a diabolical machine called the Dog-O-Matic Washing machine. It's like a car wash/laundromat  for dogs. You just stick your dog in it and voila! He comes out all fresh and clean. Supposedly, the dog has fun it. Does this dog look like he's having fun?

MSNBC repports that Animal Planet is coming up with a new reality show that will teach old dogs new tricks! It's tentatively called "Fetch me a beer" (come on, yall can do better than that!) and will start in October.

In Grand Rapids, MI, Scott Seymour decided not to euthanize his terminally ill bulldog Brittney but to use pain killers to keep her comfortable until she dies in a few weeks.

This decision saved his own life! Brittney woke him up early Saturday morning to find his house burning down! They both escaped to safety. You are a true dog hero Brittney!

Speaking of heros, Bobby Jenkins is a human hero. The Wyoming man saved his lab Tank's life! Tank was bitten on the nose by a rattlesnake and Bobby sucked the venom out himself! Bobby was 20 minutes away from the nearest town so this was the only way to save Tank. Bobby himself became sick from the venom and was given 4 vials of anti-venom  to counteract the effects. Both man and dog are fine now.

Harleys Dog News-Hero Dogs, Odd Couple and More!

Hello doggies and doggy lovers. I have lots of interesting dog news for you this week so lets get right to it!

First, I want to congratulate The Connecticut State Police Trooper Dogs for getting microchips. The American Kennel Club Companion Animal Recovery donated the microchips to the dogs to help prove their identity if they are ever lost or stolen. Fall Out-Fall in divx

Now for some odd news. ABC News reports about a couple who are soul mates, best friends and are constantly together. What's unusual about Roscoe and Suryia is that they are a dog (Bluetick Coonhound) and an orangutan. The duo met a few years ago in a South Carolina animal sanctuary and became fast friends.

Now for an interesting report. Researchers at the University of Victoria report cutting off a dog's tail deprives it of communication ability and makes it become more aggressive. In studies, they discovered that dogs will react more cautiously to a dog with a docked tail . I'm not sure if I believe this. My tail is docked. In fact it was over docked. I have no tail at all (I wag my butt when I'm happy) but my Momma will tell you that I'm one of the sweetest dogs around.

Harley's Dog News-Lions, Dumb Dogs, Smart Dogs and Dogs at Work

May 13, 2009 by doggymom

Hi there! Harley here, your canine reporter here with another week of Dog News. I have lots of stuff for you this week!

Popcorn release

Hoagie

First, did you here about the dog that had a run in with a mountain lion? Hoagie, a lab-mix  was hiking with his pet parents, the Morses' near a campground in the Cleveland National Forest, 10 miles from Lake Elsinore, when they came upon a  120-pound mountain lion.

?Three Amigos! move

"Out of nowhere, a mountain lion just charged us, attacked us. And my dog saved our lives," Morse said. The attack lasted less than 10 seconds and left poor Hoagie with deep abdominal wounds. After 4 hours of surgery and 100 stitches, Hoagie will recover.

The cool thing about this story was Hoagie was almost killed in a shelter 3 years ago when William & Candy Morse saved him and adopted him. I guess he decided to return the favor!

Next I want to make sure you know that June 26th is "Take Your Dog to Work Day" so if you work outside the home, make sure you let your boss know about it! There is a web site
Modern Inventions release TakeYorurDog.com to learn more about it and sign up.

Now we have a somewhat disturbing story, Swedish scientists at Stockholm University have found that some dog breeds are getting  more stupid with each generation. It's a problem among "handbag" pedigree dogs that were bred specifically for their appearance more than for their brains. Over time the dogs produced are disinterested, less responsive to commands and more shy.

smart-dog

In a somewhat related, yet contrary story, scientists have found that dogs have evolved quite a bit over the last 10,000 years.

American Swing movie download

Telegraph.co.uk

Nowhere to Run dvdrip

has reported that experiments with dogs have shown them to  have a "rudimentary theory of mind" in which they can reason things out somewhat like humans do.

They also have a moral compass, they expect fairness, abide by rules and expect others to do the same. They have come to know right from wrong.

An interesting observation is that feral dogs rarely bark, which leads scientists to believe that dogs bark in order to try to communicate with humans.

The article was fascinating with more observations of how dogs have become more like humans. Eat Your Heart Out rip

The Adventures of Mimi video

So what do you think? Have dogs gotten smarter or dumber? Momma thinks dogs have gotten smarter. She thinks we 4 dogs are very intelligent. We are, after all writing a blog!

Harley's Dog News-Dogs in College, a Puppy Mummy and Star Trek dogs

Time for Dog News

Hi all you doggies out there and you doggy parents. It's Harley with your weekly dog news for ya. I've got a few interesting tidbits for you this week.

dogs-students

First, let me tell you about my dream. My dream is for dogs to be able to go to all public places with their humans such as restaurants, stores and schools! I'm happy to report that one innovative school is allowing dogs in their school. The University of Wisconsin-Madison is having dogs brought to their school to ease some of the stress that students feel while dealing with final exams. They realize the value we doggies give to helping humans to relax. Kudos to them!

puppy-mummy-540x380h2

MSNBC.com has reported that a 2300 year old mummified puppy has been found in Eqypt. That's one old puppy.  Apparently it is pretty rare to find a dog mummy. Ancient Egypt was known to mummify some species of animals but not dogs.

Pulse 2: Afterlife rip My last story is sort of about one of Momma's favorite subjects. She loves Science Fiction and grew up on the different Star Trek series. Majel Roddenberry, who was Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry's wife, had a role of some kind in every Star Trek series and movie. She played in the pilot, was Nurse Chapel in the original series, played Deanna Troi's mother in The Next Generation and was even the voice of the computer in all the movies including the latest movie coming out this month.

Anyway, she recently passed away and although she left the bulk of her estate to her son, she made sure she provided for her dogs too! She set up a $4 million trust to take care of her dogs including a well paid caregiver, and their own mansion. Lucky dogs!

Harley's Dog News: Flying Chihuahuas, Glowing Beagles and More!

April 29, 2009 by doggymom

 Dog News Time!

Hi there! I'm Harley and I haven't done my dog news segment in quite awhile. Now that my skin is getting better and I have what feels like 5 pounds of hair off of me (click here for the story on me finally getting my hair shaved), I feel well enough to do my dog news segment at least a few times a month.

Bill Bailey: Part Troll movie

Glowing Cloned Beagles

This week,  I have some interesting dog news to tell you about. First, have you ever seen a glowing dog? No, me either. News 24 has reported that scientists in Seoul, Korea have engineered through cloning 4 beagles that glow red. I'm not sure how this is connected but they  say that his will lead to finding cures for human diseases.

Flying Chihuahuas and Pet Psychics

Over at msnbc.com there's an interesting story of a little Chihuahua named Tinker Bell who was picked up by high winds and carried away. Her owners Dorothy and Lavern Utley searched for several days for their little 8 month old pup  with no luck. All they found was her leash. A pet psychic contacted them and told them they would find her in some nearby woods and that she was ok. Guess what? The psychic was right. Tinker Bell ws reunited with her owners and seems no worse for the wear.

Canine Cancer Woes

For those pet parents who have lost their beloved dogs to cancer, there is a place for you to share your memories.  CureCanineCancer.org is a wonderful site that is fighting the horrible disease of cancer in dogs. They state that 1 in 4 dogs die of cancer. That is way more than I would have thought. On their site, under the "Why Hope" tag at the top of their site, go to "memories and survivor stories" to read about the wonderful canine companions that have died from cancer. Feel free to add your own story if you have one. I have to warn you, after reading those stories, Momma was crying her eyes out.

Swine Flu and Your Dog

Devil's Knight ipod

The Last Shot divx Finally, there has been a lot of talk of swine flu in the news lately. You may be worried that your dog may get it. Over at About.com, veterinarian Janet Tobiassen Crosby, DVM says that there isn't a definite answer but it's highly unlikely. Here's a link to that article if you want to read more about swine flu and pets. That's good news for us dogs! Apparently we aren't genetically similar enough to pigs to catch the flu. But people are genetically similar to pigs. Hmmm. There's a joke in there somewhere but I won't offend our human readers.

Ok, hope to talk to you again real soon with more doggy news!

Sad Dog News-Harley's Dog News Update

March 11, 2009 by doggymom

Undisputed II: Last Man Standing full movie

Psycho video

It's time for the weekly dog news and this week it's pretty sad :(    A boarding kennel in the Pocono mountains of PA had a propane accident on Friday. Several men were injured (one while trying to save the dogs) and 17 dogs were killed. One of them was a Chow puppy belonging to Martha Stewart.  So sad. More sad, but amazing news: A little 3 year old girl named Madina who lives in Russia, was being neglected by her mother. MadinaAnnaTurns out her mother wasn't even raising her. She left that job to the family dogs. The little girl could not speak, but made growling noises instead. There's no info on how many dogs or what kind but apparently they did take care of her. And finally, in more sad news, a Toronto man was killed when he was out walking his 2 dogs (King Charles Spaniels) on some train tracks. In trying to save them from an oncoming train, he was hit and killed, along with one of his dogs. The other was euthanized by a police officer at the scene. Gee, I feel like crying in my kibble. Nothing but sad news week. I'm going to try real hard to find some happy dog news next week.
