Hi there! Harley here, your canine reporter here with another week of Dog News. I have lots of stuff for you this week!
First, did you here about the dog that had a run in with a mountain lion? Hoagie, a lab-mix was hiking with his pet parents, the Morses' near a campground in the Cleveland National Forest, 10 miles from Lake Elsinore, when they came upon a 120-pound mountain lion.
"Out of nowhere, a mountain lion just charged us, attacked us. And my dog saved our lives," Morse said. The attack lasted less than 10 seconds and left poor Hoagie with deep abdominal wounds. After 4 hours of surgery and 100 stitches, Hoagie will recover.
The cool thing about this story was Hoagie was almost killed in a shelter 3 years ago when William & Candy Morse saved him and adopted him. I guess he decided to return the favor!

Next I want to make sure you know that June 26th is "Take Your Dog to Work Day" so if you work outside the home, make sure you let your boss know about it! There is a web site Modern Inventions release TakeYorurDog.com to learn more about it and sign up.
Now we have a somewhat disturbing story, Swedish scientists at Stockholm University have found that some dog breeds are getting more stupid with each generation. It's a problem among "handbag" pedigree dogs that were bred specifically for their appearance more than for their brains. Over time the dogs produced are disinterested, less responsive to commands and more shy.
In a somewhat related, yet contrary story, scientists have found that dogs have evolved quite a bit over the last 10,000 years.
has reported that experiments with dogs have shown them to have a "rudimentary theory of mind" in which they can reason things out somewhat like humans do.
They also have a moral compass, they expect fairness, abide by rules and expect others to do the same. They have come to know right from wrong.
An interesting observation is that feral dogs rarely bark, which leads scientists to believe that dogs bark in order to try to communicate with humans.
The article was fascinating with more observations of how dogs have become more like humans. Eat Your Heart Out rip
So what do you think? Have dogs gotten smarter or dumber? Momma thinks dogs have gotten smarter. She thinks we 4 dogs are very intelligent. We are, after all writing a blog!
