Keep your floors clean when you have dogs

To help keep your dog from dragging in dirt every time they come into the house, put dirt-catching mats inside the door AND outside the door. That way, twice as much dirt will be caught before the doggy paws actually touch your floors.

Dog Tip-Food Dominance Tip

eating_01You know if you have a food dominance problem if your dog growls or snaps at you when you try to take his food away. As the pack leader, you should be able to take food right out of his mouth without a problem.

Unfortunately, some dogs will growl or snap. To break the dog of this, you will have to train him for several weeks. Next feeding time, sit on the floor with the bowl of food in your lap. Take a piece of food in your hand, and offer it to your dog. Praise him softly when he takes it from you. Continue to hand feed him for only a day or so you don't want him to get in the habit of being hand fed).

After the dog associates you with his food (yummy things come from your hands) by being hand fed, keep the bowl in your lap, but call the dog over and let him eat while you are holding the bowl. Praise him if he doesn't growl. If he does growl, put the food up and start over with step one 30 minutes later.

After a few days of doing this successfully, start taking the bowl away for a few seconds or so. If the dog doesn't growl or snap, praise him and give him back the bowl.

After several days of doing this, your dog should be broken of his dominance over food with you.

Dog Tip from Harley-Getting your Dog used to Children

boy and dog

If you have a dog who is not used to children. Or she doesn't like children, here's a tip to change her attitude.

Buy a dozen jars of meat baby food and keep them in your pantry. When a child comes to visit, have the child hold the open baby food jar with both hands and get them to slowly move towards the dog until the jar is close enough for the dog to take a lick from it. Let the dog eat the baby food while the child continues to hold the jar.

This accomplishes several things. One reason dogs are afraid of kids is that kids are often loud and jerky. Holding the jar keeps the child still and relatively quiet. Offering the meaty treat, give the positive reinforcement that good things come from children.

Do this whenever you have a child come to your house. If you have a pocket or bag, keep a jar in it for when you take your dog for a walk and encounter a child that wants to pet your dog.

Harley's Dog Tip: Housetraining Trick

Most people who have raised puppies, have had housetraining issues at some point. Here's a tip to help your little one know "where to go."

Next time you have to clean up your puppy's accident, use a paper towel. Then take the soiled paper towel outside to where you want your puppy to do his "business." Put the paper towel down in that spot. Next time you take your puppy out to potty, take him to that spot. The smell of the soiled paper towel will remind him and encourage him to potty there and not in your house.

A dog bath or a dog shower-Harleys dog tip

A Dog Bath or a Dog Shower?

dog in shower

Hi dogs and dog parents! Ready for another dog tip? Ok, here goes.

We all know how hard it is to bathe a dog in the bath tub. Right? Well, why not take your dog into the shower. Yes, you will get wet too. You can just take a shower yourself, after you bathe your dog. This works particularly well if you have one of those adjustable  shower heads that you can pull down to spray your dog with.

Keep the shower curtain or shower door closed and after you are done with your dog give him a minute to shake off the excess water. That way it won't go all over the place but instead, stay in the shower.

Bedding for Dog Hair Control

Equinox Fleece Dog Bed Xlarge Tan

My dog tip for you today is if you have a problem with dog hair everywhere, buy a fleece covered dog bed like the one  pictured above. The fleece attracts the dog hair to it  (instead of your furniture and rugs). Just make sure it's washable and wash it fairly often.

Harley's Dog Tip: A Natural Way to Get Fleas Out of Your House

child and dog on carpetFlea season is in full force! Here's an idea to keep them under control: Put eucalyptus leaves in hidden spots all over your house: under your bed and mattress, under the couch cushions, under smaller carpets, behind furniture, etc. Fleas hate the smell and will "flee".
