Dog Tip-Food Dominance Tip
You know if you have a food dominance problem if your dog growls or snaps at you when you try to take his food away. As the pack leader, you should be able to take food right out of his mouth without a problem.
Unfortunately, some dogs will growl or snap. To break the dog of this, you will have to train him for several weeks. Next feeding time, sit on the floor with the bowl of food in your lap. Take a piece of food in your hand, and offer it to your dog. Praise him softly when he takes it from you. Continue to hand feed him for only a day or so you don't want him to get in the habit of being hand fed).
After the dog associates you with his food (yummy things come from your hands) by being hand fed, keep the bowl in your lap, but call the dog over and let him eat while you are holding the bowl. Praise him if he doesn't growl. If he does growl, put the food up and start over with step one 30 minutes later.
After a few days of doing this successfully, start taking the bowl away for a few seconds or so. If the dog doesn't growl or snap, praise him and give him back the bowl.
After several days of doing this, your dog should be broken of his dominance over food with you.
Til next week,
